About 13 miles from this spindle of rock, there’s a bigger Island, called Lord Howe Island. On Howe, there used to be an insect, famous for being big. It’s a stick insect, a critter that masquerades as a piece of wood, and the Lord Howe Island version was so large — as big as a human hand — that the Europeans labeled it a “tree lobster” because of its size and hard, lobster-like exoskeleton. It was 12 centimeters long and the heaviest flightless stick insect in the world. Local fisherman used to put them on fishing hooks and use them as bait.

Poetic Billboard-Jacking by Robert Montgomery

Montgomery’s art lies in his secret, ninja-like ability to sneak up to billboards in the dead of night and plaster over them with his own thought and poems. This hijacking of the corporate message replaces consumerism with personal exploration; the only real crime committed here is by the original billboard, its punishment is to live the rest of its existence as a reflection of the world around it.

not that i particularly disagree with this sentiment, but by this barometer, we also live in a murder culture, a theft culture, a genocide culture, a holocaust culture, a gangster culture, etc. elevating one type of violence over the others seems somewhat sexist and bullshit-y to me.

I don’t know that it’s particularly better to be hypersensitive/hyperaware of this and to correct it — this seems obsessively pedantic and joyless — or to ignore it and give either no or slightly negative reinforcement in order to minimize this.

“?Rape culture is a culture in which people who have survived a violent crime are asked to laugh about it because other people think it’s funny.”

— (i wish i could put this on a business card and hand it out to people who make rape jokes. the flip side would say FUCK YOU.)

When I wrote yesterday about Ridley Scott revealing the character that Guy Pearce will play in Prometheus, I teased him a little for being unable to keep the lid on a project he claims he wants to be secret. As it turns out, Scott was way ahead of me— the identity of Pearce’s character Peter Weyland, head of the corporation that sends out the Nostromo spaceship at the center of Prometheus, is key to a new viral video for the film, which went online today at, of all places, Ted.com. You might be familiar with the TED Talk series, in which geniuses of all stripes talk about topics they know a lot about. Now watch below as Peter Weyland speaks from the year 2023 and sets you up for the world of Prometheus.

Being hailed as Google Street View for the Great Barrier Reef, the Catlin Seaview Survey will begin a comprehensive study of the natural world wonder in September of 2012. Using a special “squidlike camera to capture 360-degree photos, the survey will be observing the effects of climate change on this very sensitive underwater ecosystem, as well as opening up the reef to the public. From their site

The images from the expedition, when stitched together, will allow scientists and the public at large to explore the reef remotely through any device connected to the Internet. It will allow them to choose a location, dip underwater, look around and go off on a virtual dive. It has the potential of engaging people with the life and science of our oceans in a way that’s not been possible until now. It is a very exciting time.

Yes it is! Check out the demo.
